  Dhanesh's research areas include the following subjects.
   
 
Historical Biogeography, Ethnobiology and Environmental History - This includes studies of historical distribution, introductions and dispersal of plants and animals and their associations and relationships with humans. This is the major research area of Dhanesh Wisumperuma. He pays special attention to human-elephant relationship during the history of Sri Lanka and plant and animal introductions to Sri Lanka.
   
Environmental Sciences - Dhanesh is engaged in studies on plants, animals and ecosystems. These studies are primarily focused on individual species, few places and areas.
   
Climate Change - Dhanesh is being studying about climate change and its impacts on Sri Lanka.
   
History and Archaeology - Dhanesh is engaged in studies of history and archaeology. His current historical studies focus mainly on post-colonial period, i.e. after 1500. Archaeological studies focus on few selected areas and individual sites. Current studies include sites in Kurunegala, Anuradhapura and Gampaha District.
